February 6th, Six Years Ago | The Lyfe Magazine

maximios Blog

The stage had been set. It was to be a landmark day for my daughter. She would reach a milestone in her young life on February 6th, and there would be no turning back!

The morning started out lovely. She was out of school, thanks to a local school holiday. Since she had the day off, I decided to take it off as well. We were due for some much needed quality time together and this would be a great opportunity. And, given the significance of our first appointment that day, I thought it would be fun to hang out with her.

The first order of the day was breakfast at our favorite spot. Upon getting out of the car, I remember we took a selfie to capture one of many fun moments we were anticipating that day. After eating breakfast we headed to the most important appointment on our schedule – DMV. This would be the day my daughter would obtain her driver’s license. Yes, a day to mark in infamy. She would now have free reign on the roads!

As I drove to the local DMV branch, jokes were made along the way. I often told her how much I was looking forward to the time when she could chauffer me like the movie, Driving Miss Daisy. The humor was lost on my daughter since the movie came out before she was even born! None the less, it was funny to me and I was looking forward to her obtaining her license.

We checked in and took our seats. Although there was a line when we got there, it seemed to be moving quickly. This was a good thing because we had a couple more appointments after this historic one.

Before her name was called, my cell phone rang. It was my brother. He was calling to say our mother had passed. His words did not register. I knew he wasn’t kidding but because my mind would not compute what he just said to me, my response was, “Are you kidding me?” Of course he wasn’t; no one would joke about something like that.

So there we were, in DMV falling to pieces. There was one sweet woman who came from out of nowhere and escorted my daughter and I to her office in the back. Her kindness will never be forgotten. She gave us an opportunity to grieve more privately than the public display of grief which overtook us in the lobby.

In hindsight, I can’t say how long we were in her office. Through reflection, what I do recall is my actions that day seemed out of place for the situation. Or, maybe they weren’t. I honestly believe I was in such a state of shock and didn’t know what to do. So, what we did was carry on with the rest of our day; tears and all.

The agents behind the counter at DMV had no idea what was happening in the back office. At some point, we heard my daughter’s name and number being called. The sweet woman who was providing a shoulder for us to lean on said, “You don’t have to do this today. You can come back.” As strange as it is, even to me, I told my daughter to go ahead and get her license. I would wait in the woman’s office. This was all new to my daughter. My mother’s passing was the first loss of a close family member she could remember. She was in shock as well but was able to finish the process and get her license on February 6, 2015, the day my mother gained eternal rest in Heaven.

Once gathering ourselves enough to walk through the lobby and out to the parking lot, we left and headed to our next appointment.

My mother was a very matter-of-fact person. She was sensible to the point her actions could be misconstrued as crude or insensitive (which she was neither of those things). That day I realized how much I am like my mother. The dermatologist could tell something was very wrong so he asked. The look on his face let me know he did not understand why or how I could be there in his office at that moment.

I didn’t know what to do that day. My heart felt as if it was literally breaking inside my chest, but I kept going. We finished our appointments. In a way, I felt like I was honoring my mom by doing that. She was definitely a “get it done” kind of woman.

Was my behavior strange that day? I don’t know. What do we compare it to? There is no right or wrong way to grieve. My matter-of-fact actions that day certainly were not indicative of a lack of love or respect for my mother.

You may be able to relate to this if you’ve already experienced a February 6th in your life (loss of a parent). If you haven’t, I encourage you to be kind to yourself when that day comes.

Spark Scientific Discovery at Home | The Lyfe Magazine

maximios Blog

(Family Features) Science influences many aspects of daily life in countless ways. It also helps shape the development of life skills from an early age. As children learn to communicate, think critically, make predictions and form opinions based on their observations, they are developing science skills that will last a lifetime.

Through its “Wonder of Science” initiative celebrating bringing innovation to kitchen tables for 100 years, Wonder Bread is helping to support ongoing scientific learning for students across America. In partnership with AdoptAClassroom.org and Emily Calandrelli, an American science communicator, MIT engineer and co-executive producer and host of “Emily’s Wonder Lab” on Netflix, the bread manufacturer is donating $100,000 to provide U.S. middle and high schools with supplies and equipment for science education and presenting an online series of science experiments for students.

Allowing children to put those science-based skills to the test at home can be both simple and fun. Whether you head outside to identify clouds and species of animals or work on crafts indoors, there are plenty of everyday learning scenarios that allow parents to get hands-on with their children’s education.

Bake Together
Baking can be a fun (and tasty) way to introduce scientific experimentation by following a recipe to see how the ingredients react together – or with too much or too little of a certain ingredient – and testing the end product against the desired results. As recipes are mixed, heated and cooled, baking introduces a variety of chemical reactions, including water evaporation, caramelization, browning and more.

Conduct Experiments with Everyday Supplies
Special tools and equipment aren’t necessary for discovering and fostering a love of science or conducting your own experiments. By using household items you may already have on hand and following a few simple instructions from Calandrelli, you can create your own homemade rockets or inflate a balloon.

“Getting kids excited about science and interested in how it affects our lives every day is the best part of what I do,” Calandrelli said. “Joining Wonder Bread to spread that message of wonder not just through my show but directly into classrooms is a fantastic opportunity. I can’t wait to share my love of science.”

Start a Garden
One of the best ways to introduce children to a variety of plant species and the process through which they grow is to grow your own garden. Start by letting the kids pick some plants or vegetables that germinate and produce a crop quickly such as carrots or petunias then choose a location to plant. Test and prepare the soil then plant your seeds and water as needed.

Trump Escalates Tensions with North Korea | The Lyfe Magazine

maximios Blog

Much to the surprise of some senior aides, President Donald J. Trump promised to unleash “fire and fury” against North Korea if the country and its leader, Kim Jong-un, continued threats against the United States. On Tuesday, August 8, 2017, the president said, “North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen.” Later, Chief of Staff General John Kelly stated that he and others on the National Security Council were, indeed, aware of the statement beforehand. Rep. Adam Schiff (California), the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, repudiated Trump by saying, “The erratic and fiery belligerence of his statements and tweets do little to defuse the situation and threaten to make a bad situation worse.”

General Kim Rak Gyom

Head of North Korea’s Strategic Rocket Forces, General Kim Rak Gyom, dismissed Trump’s statement as a “load of nonsense,” and stated, “Sound dialogue is not possible with such a guy bereft of reason and only absolute force can work on him.” North Korea is working on a plan to launch missiles at Guam, a U. S. territory and the location of a U. S. airbase.

Trump took to Twitter to boast about the nuclear prowess of the United States, “…Hopefully we will never have to use this power, but there will never be a time that we are not the most powerful nation in the world!” Senator Bernie Sanders (Independent-Vermont) also took to Twitter, saying, “Trump’s bombastic rhetoric is not appropriate when we are dealing with the possibility of a nuclear war that could kill millions of people.”

Conclusion

Is the United States on the eve of a nuclear war with North Korea? While the idea of a world ravaged by nuclear attacks is justifiably horrifying, it is too soon to expect this to be the outcome. It is likely just posturing by the leaders of the two countries and will amount to little more than a war of words. When dealing with the possible annihilation and suffering of so many people, even hotheads usually allow cooler heads to prevail.

Just a Thought – 27 Hours Book Review | The Lyfe Magazine

maximios Blog

27 Hours (What Would You Do If You Faced The End?)

Have you ever felt as though there aren’t enough hours in a day? Don’t have enough time to spend with family and friends? Can’t complete the project for work that your boss wanted yesterday? At some point and time in our lives, we all have felt that if we had more time in a day we could complete the many tasks that we leave undone daily. In this riveting, spell-binding, on the edge of your seat novel 27 Hours, Gerald C. Anderson, Sr., not only gives you a glimpse into the lives of the citizens who only have 27 Hours before destruction and chaos hits earth, he also takes you on a path that has crooks, turns, ups, downs and if you are not careful, it could all lead to a deep and dark place.

The Story

The story unfolds as the President of the United States pens a letter to anyone who might survive the asteroid expected to hit earth and snuff out life as they know it. He begins to spill his feelings of regret, heartbreak and his step-by-step attempt to stop the inevitable….the ASTEROID! How was he going to protect the citizens? Should he tell them? Or should he let them go about their daily lives? This was a question that he struggled with. Here he was the President of the United States, and it seemed as though there was nothing that he could do. So, he does the only thing that feels right to do. He tells them.

As the news began to seep into every television station and every radio station, Bishop Milton Carroll prepared to speak to his congregation. He walked out and placed his papers on the podium and paused for a moment; then he began. At first, everyone agreed with him but suddenly everything went south. It didn’t line up. Christians began to question and doubt everything that they believed in. Lawlessness began to take the shape of parties, drugs, stealing and promiscuity. Some of Bishop Carroll’s members decided to enjoy the rest of their lives by partaking in the “Peachtree Zone” while others decide to stick with what they knew and that was JESUS!

Summary

As the plot thickens and the characters begin to submerge themselves into different situations, the story draws the reader into the pages that are quickly turned in order to find out what happens next. It is amazing how the story becomes thought provoking and makes you confront your own understanding of the end of times. Will it be wrapped in a pretty bow? Handed to you on a platter? Or will you only have 27 Hours to figure out whom you will serve?

Almost еvеrуоnе it would be ideal to have a ѕtrоng, lеаn, аnd trim bоdу. Most people wаnt to lооk аttrасtіvе nоt only tо thе орроѕіtе ѕеx, but to thе rеѕt оf thе wоrld іn gеnеrаl. Most people аlѕо wаnt tо enjoy the hеаlth that соmеѕ wіth a fit bоdу. Yоur wееklу fitness рlаn іdеаllу wіll include a workout fоr your muѕсlеѕ аnd bоnеѕ. Strоng muѕсlеѕ аnd bones hеlр the bоdу tо funсtіоn more effectively аnd lеаd tо a long аnd healthy lіfе. Tоnеd muѕсlеѕ are еѕѕеntіаl іn kееріng уоur mеtаbоlіѕm іn hіgh gеаr, whісh wіll рrеvеnt wеіght gаіn. Being physically асtіvе wіll also kеер уоur heart аnd lungѕ in the bеѕt соndіtіоn.

All Fitness Plаnѕ Shоuld Addrеѕѕ Your Food аnd Aіr Intаkе And Your Emоtіоnаl Hеаlth

Thе food, drіnk, and air уоu tаkе іntо уоur bоdу аlѕо рlауѕ a lаrgе rоlе іn your fitness рlаn. Thе ideal рlаn wоuld bе tо keep уоur body соmрlеtеlу frее оf tоxіnѕ аnd еxсеѕѕ fаt. Thеѕе аrе the thіngѕ that lead tо degenerative dіѕеаѕе.

Whаt аbоut your emotional аnd іntеllесtuаl hеаlth? Whаt gооd іѕ hаvіng a ѕtrоng аnd hеаlthу body іf уоu don’t hаvе thе capacity tо enjoy yourself and give to оthеrѕ? Dеvеlоріng a healthy brаіn and emotional оutlооk рlауѕ a lаrgе part іn уоur оvеrаll fіtnеѕѕ. It’s even dіffісult tо know whісh comes fіrѕt, a positive аnd healthy outlook оr a hеаlthу аnd trіm bоdу; each influences the other.

How Tо Aсhіеvе Innеr Fіtnеѕѕ

Nоw, what are the bаѕіс and bеѕt wауѕ tо go аbоut асhіеvіng аll thеѕе hеаlthу аnd good feelings?

Lеt’ѕ ѕtаrt with your mіnd. Fееdіng уоur mind keeps your brаіn ѕhаrр and іn-tunе wіth your world. Make it a hаbіt to rеаd a vаrіеtу оf bооkѕ, magazines, аnd nеwѕ реrіоdісаlѕ. Dо сrоѕѕwоrd аnd other types оf puzzles fоr brаіn еxеrсіѕе аnd fоr fun. Doing so mау help wаrd off ѕеnіlіtу оrAlzhеіmеr’ѕ disease aѕ wеll.

What about ѕtrеѕѕ? Yоur thоughtѕ аnd еmоtіоnѕ tаkе a bеаtіng when you experience negative stress. Nеgаtіvе ѕtrеѕѕ соmеѕ аbоut quite nоrmаllу because оf the оbѕtасlеѕ уоu are dеаlіng with every dау іn уоur fаmіlу lіfе, уоur саrееr, аnd уоur ѕосіаl life. In a way, we аrе constantly fіghtіng ѕmаll bаttlеѕ with оurѕеlvеѕ аnd оthеrѕ. Thіѕ сrеаtеѕ ѕtrеѕѕ, and ѕtrеѕѕ muѕt bе dealt wіth оr іt wіll have a bаd еffесt оn thе mіnd аnd bоdу. Evеn positive stress соmіng out оf a wоndеrful еxреrіеnсе wіll саuѕе fatigue and require rest.

Hоw tо dеаl with ѕtrеѕѕ? Here are a fеw basic stress buѕtеrѕ that are sufficient to help deal with stress.

  • Slеер (7 tо 8 hours реr night)
  • Engаgіng іn a hоbbу оr twо
  • Enjоуіng yourself wіth fаmіlу or frіеndѕ
  • Cаrvіng оut some alone time tо rе-сhаrgе your bаttеrу

Also, hоw аbоut a hоt bath, a ѕhоrt ѕhорріng trip, оr a trір tо thе mоvіеѕ? Mаkе уоur stress-busting асtіоnѕ ѕіmрlе for bеѕt rеѕultѕ. Prасtісіng ѕоmе fоrm оf mеdіtаtіоn іѕ аlѕо a grеаt wау to beat stress аnd іѕ vеrу easy.

Nеxt, lеt’ѕ соnѕіdеr thе food, drіnk, аnd air уоu tаkе іn tо уоur bоdу. You аrе what уоu brеаthе as well as whаt уоu еаt аnd drіnk. This cannot bе оvеrѕtаtеd. Be dеtеrmіnеd tо take іn оnlу hеаlthу ѕubѕtаnсеѕ. Eat a nutrіtіоuѕ dіеt whісh includes fresh fruіtѕ аnd vegetables, whоlе grains, lеаn protein аnd good fаtѕ. Eat аѕ many оrgаnіс fооdѕ аѕ уоu саn аffоrd. Drіnk thе рurеѕt water уоu can find. Avoid ѕесоnd-hаnd ѕmоkе, and іf you ѕmоkе, gеt the hеlр you nееd tо quіt. Cоnѕіdеr аn аіr purifier fоr your hоmе. Yоur ѕkіn brеаthеѕ, tоо, ѕо uѕе ѕkіn рrоduсtѕ thаt contain antioxidants to protect it from thе effects оf аіr pollution. Kеер уоur аlсоhоl соnѕumрtіоn moderate. Onе сосktаіl a day, or оnе оr two glаѕѕеѕ оf wіnе per dау іѕ mоrе than sufficient. Uѕе аlсоhоl tо еnhаnсе your lіfе – don’t lеt іt control уоur life.

Yоur Exеrсіѕе Fіtnеѕѕ Plаn Wіll Rеѕult іn a Slіm and Tоnеd Bоdу

Thіrd, think аbоut уоur рlаn for fіtnеѕѕ. Hоw can уоu gеt уоur muѕсlеѕ аnd bones in shape and асhіеvе a slim, strong body? Aеrоbіс еxеrсіѕе іѕ really beneficial as іt еxеrсіѕеѕ уоur all-important heart muscle and уоur lungѕ. Walk, run, jog, оr рlау a vіgоrоuѕ ѕроrt lіkе bаѕkеtbаll оr tеnnіѕ. But dоn’t ѕtор thеrе. Fіnd a ѕоlіd wеіght trаіnіng program thаt wіll hеlр you lose еxсеѕѕ wеіght even mоrе quісklу. A trіеd and truе fіtnеѕѕ рlаn will gіvе уоu the ѕtruсturе needed to kеер оn trасk. You will fіnd thаt wеіght trаіnіng іѕ one оf thе bеѕt wауѕ tо get іn ѕhаре. Strоng, tоnеd muscles will help your bоdу burn calories еvеrу mіnutе оf thе dау, with thе аddеd benefit оf mаkіng уоur body look good and уоur clothes fіt great. Of course, you ѕhоuld сhесk with your dосtоr before ѕtаrtіng аnу kіnd of fitness рrоgrаm.

Alwауѕ Stау Positive

Finally, remember tо start еасh day wіth a роѕіtіvе оutlооk. Begin еасh day thіnkіng about ѕоmеthіng gооd іn уоur life, or about a рlаn to еnjоу уоurѕеlf іn ѕоmе small wау. Aѕ hоkеу аѕ іt ѕоundѕ, count уоur blеѕѕіngѕ each dау. People who kеер a grаtіtudе journal аrе hарріеr аnd рrоbаblу healthier also. Don’t fоrgеt tо ѕmіlе. It wіll mаkе you fееl hарріеr, аnd іt can make ѕоmеоnе еlѕе’ѕ day brіghtеr, too.

Leslie Saint-Julien: I Can Do All Things | The Lyfe Magazine

maximios Blog

In 2015, I released, ‘Standing Firm’ in Washington DC. I made a very wise decision in selecting a beautiful, young lady to perform her poetry for my guests at the release. She was charismatic, energetic, powerful and awesome. Her poem continues to stick out in my mind as well as the minds of all those who attended the event. Even today, people still talk about her and the powerful performance she gave.

Meet Leslie

Leslie Saint-Julien is a poet, dancer, author and actor. But most of all she is a highly favored Christian woman. Born in Brooklyn, New York she began her stage career at the tender age of six years old. Her first performance was in front of 3,000 people at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Fearless and with perfection she danced her heart out and at the end of the performance she knew being on stage was her destiny.

Leslie continued her dance career into college at the University of Maryland where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology & Criminal Justice. During her time in college she added modern and West-African dance techniques to her skill set. She also began her creative writing education in college. It was during this time in her life that she was introduced to performance poetry, otherwise known as ‘spoken word’.

She Fell in Love

Leslie immediately fell in love with the expressive style of the spoken word. Coupled with her love for being on stage, it wasn’t long before she added this to her repertoire and began performing.

In college she presented and performed her first spoken word entitled, ‘Invisible Man’ on a Baltimore stage. Since then, she has performed this style all over the Washington DC metro area. Leslie says, “I’m always ready to deliver poetry from my heart and soul! I don’t need a microphone!” I am a living witness to this fact. From the moment she spoke the first word, I was captivated. I looked around the room and so was everyone else!

Published Author

In 2013, Leslie published her first collection of poems entitled, “More Than Me”. In 2015, she added to the collection and it is available anywhere books are sold. When asked about the collection, Leslie answered, “I handpicked some of my favorite most intimate poetry, thoughts and songs that I had written over my years of writing and bound them into this book.”

She is never one to stop. In 2015, Leslie decided to publish a collection of rhythmic poetry for children and parents to read together called Brooklyn Stew! “I decided to identify with the root of my love for poetry which began long before that college course in my junior year. I was exposed to poetry in elementary school while reading Dr. Seuss collections. But the one book that really stuck with me, of which I keep a copy of today, was ‘Where the Sidewalk Ends’ by Shel Silverstein. It is my all-time favorite,” said Leslie. Her goal with ‘Brooklyn Stew’ is to foster the bonding of parents and children. If you have children, ‘Brooklyn Stew’ is certainly a must buy.

Stepping on the Acting Stage

Recently, Leslie has focused on acting, specifically in the theater. Leslie just performed in the Northern Anne Arundel Cultural Preservation Society’s stage play, ‘Emancipation: The Next Chapter’. Currently, she is preparing for the production of ‘Lord I Believe’ which will be on stage at the Slayton House Theater in Columbia, MD on June 24, 2017. This production will also travel to Phoenix, AZ in December 2017.

Significant Accomplishments

When asked about her significant accomplishments, Leslie answered, “My most significant accomplishments have been to be able to travel nationally, and touring my children’s book and being invited to speak to young people and their parents at various venues. It matters so much to me to be an inspiration to young children, especially those from underrepresented communities and young African American girls, to follow their dreams. I thank God for giving me the gifts to be able to do so in so many ways!”

Leslie’s Goals

Leslie’s goals for her career involve touching the hearts of people all over the world by using her God given gifts and talents. This year will be busy for her with all the acting but she is still finding time to prepare to publish her third collection of poetry called, ‘Letters from My Father’. She will also be releasing a spoken word poetry album. Leslie plans to record the album in a music studio this year in collaboration with other performing artists. You don’t want to miss it!

Advice to Others

As a final question I asked Leslie what advice she could give to up and coming artists. She answered, “My advice to young artists entering the destination of their careers would be to never stop dreaming and stay true to who they are.”

“While still passionate about sharing my gifts in stage performance, I always maintain a connection with the arts. Be it dance performances, spoken word performances, stage acting and anything that allows me to be creatively expressive. I love the performing arts,” says Leslie Saint-Julien!

Carpe Diem (Seize the Day) | The Lyfe Magazine

maximios Blog

2022 is here and that means a new year and a new you, right? Just kidding. I think that ship has left the port on misguided journeys many times over. The truth is, any change we are serious about making, we would simply implement. There would be no need to wait until January 1st of any particular year to do so.

On a sincere note, however, I am wondering two things:

1. Why do we feel January 1st is the best day to put change into practice?

2. Why do we feel the need to announce the impending changes we plan to make?

As for the first point, there seems to be something refreshing about the beginning of a new year; almost as if we regain a sense of hope which allows us to believe again that anything is possible. Also, we tend to over indulge in a variety of ways in the months leading up to the New Year. Do we select January 1st as a starting point for change in order to give ourselves a pass during the holidays?

Saving money is easier in January after the spending frenzy of the holidays is behind us. Eating healthier becomes much more feasible January 1st. By then, all of the pies, cookies, and cakes have been consumed. Maintaining a regular exercise routine does seem to be less complicated in January. The hustle and bustle of holiday traveling, parties, and the around the town house-hopping to spread holiday cheer is over with the dawning of the New Year.

If we were to be truthful, do we purposefully wait for this one time a year to do soul-searching? We coast through the year, giving no thought to ways we can challenge ourselves to be a better person, to accomplish more, to take our health seriously, etc. However, an introspective is beneficial periodically, not just once a year. What’s wrong with conducting a self-check on April 16th and September 28th as well? Should we not gauge our progress to be sure we are still focused on what we set out to do in January?

To the second point, I wonder if the public declarations are intended to be a form of accountability? If we announce to the masses our plan to work out three days a week, are we, in actuality, expecting those in our circle to keep us motivated? Many times, the second day at the gym can look more like our final day without the support and encouragement of friends and family. Do we broadcast our goals and resolutions to encourage others to make their own vows? Why do we publicize our course of action for the New Year? Are we less likely to quit if we think people are watching our progress more closely than we are?

On today, if you are updating your game plan for life, great! Sincere prayers for success are headed your way. If you’re planning to enjoy this day as the holiday it is, without thought of making adjustments, that’s absolutely fine as well. When the pages of the calendar turn to March and you think it may be time to do some things differently, go right ahead. Tomorrow is promised to no one (Matthew 24:36) and January 1, 2023 is many moons away. You can accomplish much between now and then.

Carpe diem (seize the day) and happy New Year!

Heroes of the Pandemic – Craig Jorden Jr | The Lyfe Magazine

maximios Blog

Lt. Craig Jorden, Jr. has been in the United States Air Force Reserve for eleven years and is a Registered Nurse (RN). When not on assignment with the Reserve, Lt. Jorden works at the VA Hospital in Tampa, FL. He is also a Clinical Instructor at Hillsborough Community College (HCC) and Jersey College.

Given a two-day notice, Lt. Jorden was deployed to New York City on April 20th with an unspecified return date. Upon arrival, his first assignment location was the Javits Center. It is a 760,000 square foot convention facility which had been temporarily converted to a hospital with capabilities of treating 800 patients at one time. Within two weeks, Lt. Jorden was reassigned to provide services at Manhattan’s Bellevue Hospital.

For Lt. Jorden, one of the most challenging aspects of the COVID-19 crisis is the affect it is having on the patients. “Patients are scared. Some can’t talk because they are in bed with a tracheotomy. Those who can talk though are thankful for us being there to help them” he said. “The virus is devastating”, he added.

Leaving his wife and son behind during the worldwide crisis in order to serve his country by providing care for others has been challenging as well. As a father and husband, Lt. Jorden understands his role as a protector of his family. At the same time, he realizes the commitment he made to his country comes with personal sacrifices. He is grateful his family is supportive of his service.

Even amid the crisis, life goes on. Lt. Jorden is a few months away from completing a two-year program to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Practitioner. Working 14-15 hours days in the Emergency Room at Bellevue while keeping up with course work has not been easy but quitting is not an option for Lt. Jorden. He has set his sights on this goal and will see it through to graduation in December.

I asked Lt. Jorden if he sees any good coming from the pandemic. “It has changed my perspective and outlook on life. We can’t take things, like our families, for granted. We can’t get so consumed with work or school that we don’t spend time with our families. Nothing is promised.“ Lt. Jorden also indicated his awareness of small, underlying health issues has been heightened due to COVID-19. Patients with previous underlying health issues have been the most at risk. This has made him more focused on things such as wellness check-ups which he will be implementing for himself and his family moving forward.

When asked about his thoughts on lockdown measures, Lt. Jorden thinks it has helped prevent the spread of the virus, especially in heavily populated cities such as New York. He said he can’t help but wonder if the lockdown had been implemented sooner, if more lives would have been saved. That certainly was not a statement of blame on his part; simply a personal reflection.

Lt. Jorden is for phased re-openings. “The country can’t stay closed forever. Safely reopening is beneficial for the economy” he said. According to Lt. Jorden, everything is still closed in New York City and the streets are empty. “It looks more like a scene from a movie (I Am Legend) than real life when you’ve been here before and know what the City usually looks like.”

As reopening occurs, he recommends everyone take steps to protect themselves. “Clean the surface of the table if you go to a restaurant. Put your utensils in hot water before using them. Wear PPE (personal protective equipment), etc.” He also recommends that everyone remain careful around the elderly. “People can be asymptomatic and not know it. You don’t want to give this virus to your grandparents” he said.

Lt. Jorden’s opinion is that it will be two to three years before there will be a level of “normal” again in the medical field. Until a vaccine is found, he believes we will live with a certain level of COVID-19 precautionary measures.

The Lyfe Magazine would like to thank Lt. Craig Jorden, Jr. and all personnel from every branch of our United States Armed Forces for your service and personal sacrifices.
